When to Visit

Best Time For Safari in Tanzania

The best time to visit Tanzania depends on the wildlife you want to see. The Great Migration happens year-round in the Serengeti, but the peak viewing period is from July to September when wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River, attracting many visitors. The quieter “green season” from November to March brings occasional rain, but it’s perfect for birdwatching and spotting newborn calves among the migrating herds.

Month By Month Guide

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

Every month in Tanzania offers a unique safari experience. From January to March, the Serengeti is alive with the Great Migration calving season, where thousands of wildebeest are born, attracting predators like lions and cheetahs. April and May bring the green season, with lush landscapes and fewer crowds, perfect for photography and birdwatching. June to August marks the start of the dry season, ideal for game viewing as animals gather around water sources, and the Great Migration heads toward the Grumeti and Mara rivers. September and October are peak months for witnessing dramatic river crossings in the Serengeti. Finally, November and December bring short rains, reviving the scenery and drawing migratory birds, while herds begin their journey back south. No matter the time of year, Tanzania’s wildlife spectacle is always unfolding.
