When is the best time to see the great wildebeest migration in Tanzania?

During the period of December to March, the Serengeti Migration congregates in large herds around Lake Ndutu in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of Tanzania Safari. So, the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti is usually during June and July and January to February is the perfect time to see the wildebeest calving.

What does a Tanzania Safari cost?

Ideally, there is no fixed price range for Tanzania safari. There are several factors such as time, numbers of days, and accommodations types that influence the Tanzania safari cost. However, the average cost of Tanzania Safari per day can come down to $400 (dollars) per head for a lodge safari and around $200 (dollars) per day for camping.

Join us as we take you on a journey through some of the most fascinating destinations in the world.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Here, you’ll have time to relax, recover from your flight, and attend a pre-climb briefing with your mountain guide. This evening will include a thorough gear check to ensure you’re fully prepared for the trek ahead.

Day 2: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

After breakfast, you’ll be driven to Marangu Gate (1,870m) where you’ll register with the park authorities before beginning your trek. Today’s hike takes you through dense rainforest, home to colobus monkeys and a variety of birds. After about 4–5 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut, located in a forest clearing. Settle in and take a short walk to Maundi Crater if time and energy allow.

Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Leaving the forest behind, the trail ascends into open moorland with sweeping views of the mountainside. The landscape shifts dramatically as you approach Horombo Hut, your base for the next two nights. The hike takes about 5–6 hours, with views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks along the way. You’ll enjoy dinner and rest in comfortable shared huts.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Today, you’ll trek across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, passing through desert-like alpine terrain. This portion of the route is quieter and more rugged. After 5–6 hours, you’ll reach Kibo Hut, where you’ll rest and have an early dinner in preparation for the midnight summit attempt. It’s important to hydrate and rest as much as possible.

Day 5: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) & Return to Horombo Hut

Your summit attempt begins just after midnight. With headlamps lighting your path, you’ll slowly make your way up steep switchbacks toward Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim, and then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Reaching the top in time for sunrise is an unforgettable experience. After taking in the views and a few photos, you’ll descend to Kibo for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Transfer to Arusha

After a final breakfast on the mountain, you’ll descend through the moorland and forest zones back to Marangu Gate. Here, you’ll receive your official summit certificate. You’ll then be transferred to Arusha or Moshi for a well-deserved shower, celebratory meal, and a relaxing evening at your hotel.

Day 7: Safari Begins – Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, your safari driver will pick you up and you’ll head toward Tarangire National Park, known for its vast elephant herds and massive baobab trees. Enjoy a full-day game drive in this scenic park, spotting elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and more. You’ll have a picnic lunch inside the park and then transfer to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Full-Day Safari in Ngorongoro Crater

An early start takes you to Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where you’ll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to a dense population of wildlife, including black rhinos, lions, hippos, and more. After a full day of game viewing and a picnic lunch, you’ll head to your lodge near Lake Manyara or Karatu for dinner and rest.

Day 9: Lake Manyara National Park – Return to Arusha

Your final safari day takes you to Lake Manyara National Park, known for its tree-climbing lions, large troops of baboons, flamingos, and diverse birdlife. You’ll enjoy a morning game drive through its lush groundwater forest and around the lake’s edge before driving back to Arusha in the afternoon. Relax at your hotel or enjoy some souvenir shopping.

Day 10: Departure Day – Kilimanjaro International Airport

Depending on your flight schedule, you’ll have time to relax or explore a bit more of Arusha. You’ll then be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure, ending your memorable 10-day Kilimanjaro and safari adventure.

GETTING VISA IN TANZANIA

To visit Tanzania, you need a valid passport (at least 6 months beyond your stay) and a tourist visa. You can apply for a visa online before your trip or get one upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. However, getting it in advance is recommended to avoid long queues and potential delays. Visas typically cost around $50, although US citizens may pay $100. UK, US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, and most EU citizens need a visa to enter Tanzania. You can also apply online at Tanzania eVisa. Make sure to read the guidelines and ensure you are entering through an approved entry point.

  • In Zanzibar: The Office of the Principal Immigration Officer
  • Abroad: Any Tanzanian Embassy or High Commission or via the Tanzania Immigration Services website

Twende Africa Tours terms & conditions – We are registered and Licensed Tanzania Tour Operator under the laws of Tanzania and accepts your bookings under the following terms and conditions.

DEPOSIT & PAYMENT

To secure place, 10% down payment is required to make in advance as per the company policy, the payment will be made via bank transfer or online payment with visa, master card and America express etc.

Deposit and final payments can be made via bank transfer or online payment with your master card or visa card within 30 days’ prior the tour or in cash upon arrival (USD). Please note US dollar notes printed prior to 2001 are not accepted anywhere in Tanzania. Transfer details will be emailed on request.

All bank charges are to be settled by the client respectively. This includes transaction fees charged by our bank. Our bank will not charge a fee for wire transfers but your bank will and there may possibly be a 3rd bank involved. From our experience we see bank fees for wire transfers from $35 – $50. The amount charged for a wire transfer is not dependent on the amount sent.

ONLINE PAYMENT

Payment can be made through our online payment system using credit card at a surcharge of 3.5%.

THE BOOKING

Bookings and ensuing contracts shall be deemed to have been concluded in Moshi, Tanzania and shall be interpreted according to the laws of the United Republic of Tanzania. The Company reserves the right to decline any booking without outlining the reasons for it.

All travelers receive pre-trip information, complete itinerary and on-demand pre-travel advice, via email or directly with our offices for any last minute or personal queries.

In the event of a particular accommodation being unavailable upon booking, accommodation of a similar or higher standard will be substituted.

BOOKING AMENDMENTS

For amendments of existing bookings done by the client/ agent (e.g. departure dates, air tickets, accommodation, number of participants etc) a handling fee of 70 USD per booking applies. The handling fee will be charged in addition to the service provider fees.

CANCELLATIONS

Twende Africa Tours entitled to act as an agent or principal with regard to the provision of the services.

Having paid full amount of any trip, you are entitled to incur refund in case if you want to cancel your trip. Still, cancellation charge is invoiced to you. Written notification of your cancellation should be made to cancel any trip. Nevertheless, you are imposed cancellation charge as advised below: –

  • 90 – 60 days or more deposit retained
  • 59 – 45 days before departure 50% of the TOTAL BOOKING COST shall be refunded.
  • 44 – 30 days before departure 75% of the TOTAL BOOKING COST shall be refunded.
  • 29 – 01 days before departure 100% no refund of the TBC shall be made.

If Twende Africa Tours cancels your trip due to unforeseen circumstances like weather and Pandemics etc. we would be happy to refer your alternative trip of a similar standard. If this doesn’t fit your personal interest, all monies paid by you to our company will be refunded. But remember, any other expenses incurred by you as a result of this booking are entirely your responsibility.
