The Machame route, also known as the "Whiskey" route, is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro. Machame’s draw is in its scenic beauty. However, the trail is considered difficult, steep and challenging, particularly due to its shorter itinerary. Therefore this route is better suited for more adventurous folks or those with some high altitude, hiking or backpacking experience.
The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the south, beginning with a short drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. The path leads hikers through the rain forest to Shira Plateau. Here, many of Kilimanjaro’s routes converge. Then the route turns east and traverses underneath Kilimanjaro's Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route.
Twende Africa Tours offers Machame as a 8 days group Kilimanjaro climb, 7 days or as a 6 day private climb. The six day variation combines days four and five, going from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp without staying at Karanga. This package is special for the people who want to challenge themselves to spend the night at Crater. But we still have some option either to overnight at Barafu camp or special use camp Kosovo.

Drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 45 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain.
We depart the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. At lower elevations the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.
After breakfast we leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the valley along a steep rocky ridge. The route now turns west onto a river gorge until we arrive at the Shira campsite.
From the Shira Plateau we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth” (elev 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower we come to the second junction which goes to the Arrow Glacier. We now continue down to the Barranco Camp. Although you end the day around the same elevation as when you began, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.
After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge up the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley and the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail.
Today is a relatively short trek, and after breakfast, you will make your way to Karanga Valley Camp, past the crowded Barafu Camp, and make your way to the Kosovo special use camp. At camp, we will rest, enjoy dinner, and spend a night at Kosovo camp.
Morning after breakfast we prepare for our day time ascend to Stella point down to Crater and summit.
To Spend a night at Crater is an option please contact us for more details.
You will leave at 8 am and take your time, slowly walking and saving energy for the final climb. You will take lots of breaks on the section and continue to cross around Kilimanjaro before a final steep section to Barafu Camp at 4,650m/ 15,256 feet. This is where most people stay before their ascent of Kilimanjaro. We move through Barafu Camp and hike an additional hour further to Kosovo Camp at 4,900m/ 16,076 feet.
The walk to Barafu Camp is approximately 3 hours and then another hour to Kosovo Camp, so a total of 4 hours today. The goal will be to be there for a big lunch/ dinner around 2 pm. We encourage you to rest after the meal as you will get up at 11:30 pm to prepare for your summit bid. Today you will walk 3.5km/ 2.2 miles.
A short descent brings you to Crater Camp, set on soft sands near the famed Furtwangler Glacier. Crater camp is not a route in its own right but a challenging extension that in principle can be added to any route. It involves sleeping overnight in the bowl of the crater. An amazing experience enjoyed by only a few of the most adventurous climbers.
Elevation: 49000m to 5750m, 16,076 ft to 18,865 ft
Distance: 5 km
Hiking time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
We retrace our steps along the crater rim to Stella Point and then descend down through Barafu Camp to reach Millennium Camp, or Mweka High Camp, at 3,800m. Relax, get some rest, and congratulate yourself on a hard day’s trekking – you’ve done it!
Walk down across the Alpine moorland and through the forested foothills to Mweka Gate (1,650m) for a picnic lunch, presentation of certificates and group photos.
This is a long walk-off lasting 5 to 6 hours, and perhaps even longer if there is rain on the route. As the southern flank tends to receive more rain, it is quite likely that you will encounter wet and very muddy conditions in the rainforest section on this last day. Please be prepared for this and do not expect an easy jaunt back to the gate! Nevertheless, the route is very beautiful and well worth the effort.
After lunch, we drive approx.. 30 minutes to your Hotel, where a hot shower, dinner & rest await!

Peter was an excellent, friendly, and knowledgeable guide. I did the 6 day Machame tour with comfort and ease - thanks to Peter's reminders to go slow and his team's hard work to ensure camp was ready upon our arrival. Peter had great leadership qualities and clearly seems to know how to deal with diverse clients.
Peter Kinyaiya is an excellent guide. He lead our group of porters and trekkers up the Machame route. Every one of us made it to Uhuru Peak the summit of Kilimanjaro. Peter was always ready with a helping hand or encouraging words.
It was an awesome trekking trip. My friends and I took Machame Route. I was very impressed with the beauty of various vegetation and flora as well as the breathtaking scenes over the whole mountain massif. Although I could not summit the Uhuru Peak because of my stomach problem but all of my friends accomplished with their big smiles. Thank...
My friends and I were on the week of Kilimanjaro Marathon, some of our group run full marthon and myself half. This race is a great race. We started our jorney on that afternoon when we have finshed the run. With the excellent care and support from Twende Group, my friend and I reached the Uhuru Peak exactly the time of sunrise. What amazing view, we experience. This would be one of our impressive our memory. Safari on the last day, we met closely with all Big Five.Thank You !!! Twede Africa Team.
Machame Route We enjoyed every meter of this tour. Only the summit night was very hard. But Peter and Richi motivated us again and again and pole pole we reached the Stella Point. Here we experienced the most beautiful sunrise of our life. The last part of way up to Uhuru Peak was just fantastic. Walk through the snow, gaze at the giant glaciers and see the destination in front. We were so happy! Thanks to Peter from Twende Africa Tours and his whole team. They have made it possible for us to realize our dream.
